The Moldovan Rugby Festival was held on the pitch of the Rugby Federation in Durlesti town. This year it is 50 years of the playing of the first rugby match in Moldova and 25 years of the foundation of the National Rugby Federation, IPN reports.

“The Moldovan rugby reached a nice age, of half a century. That’s why we wanted two generations, of children and veterans, to take part in the Festival. We also implemented a rugby program in the national schools. This is a non-contact version intended for boys and girls, from the age of eight,” stated the president of the National Rugby Federation Alexei Cotruta.

The event involved over 150 children from all over the country and five teams of veterans from Chisinau, Tiraspol, Focsani, Barlad and Iasi.

“The organization was very good. We have known each other for years and play with expats from the Republic of Moldova,” said the former player of Politehnica Iasi Vali Baietu.

Rugby started to be played in Moldova in 1967. Owing to Vladimir Blizniuc, the first national rugby team was created at the Polytechnic Institute and the first rugby match was played against those from Burevestnik Odessa.
