Romanies from Moldova do not know their rights. This conclusion was made by the Women’s Political Club (CPF) 50/50, Young Romanies Union „Tarna Rom” and Romany Women’s Association „Juvlia Romani”, which have implemented the regional project „Femeile rome pot reusi” (Romany Women can succeed).
CPF 50/50 chairwoman Ecaterina Mardarovici stated, on Wednesday, June 14, at a press conference that the members of „Juvlia Romani” and „Tarna Rom” have organized meetings with the Romany population in many villages of RM, as result there were formulated the biggest problems of Romanies – no knowledge of their rights, children’s lack of education, as well as medical services ignoring.
Social-Sanitary moderators, who were part of the project, talked about the difficulties met along the project. There were as well cases when the moderators were insulted and even spit at for trying to convince a Romany woman to visit a doctor or a child to go to school. According to them, old Romany women do not know that they can benefit of allowances or even pensions, or that women giving birth to a baby can benefit of allowances for bringing-up the child.
The moderators noted that as result of the implementation of the project Romanies’ situation has improved significantly.
The representative of „Tarna Rom”, Tatiana Sarbu, reported at the conference that the aim of the project was to identify Romanies’ problems, and the results of the project will be presented to the Ministry of Education and Youth.
The project was launched by the Gender Task Force of the Stability Pact for South-Eastern Europe and implemented on September 2005 – June 2006.
