President Vladimir Voronin asks for international support in solving the Transnistrian conflict and in overcoming polemics as to Moldova’s national identity and present borders, Info-Prim Neo reports as informed by a communiqué on the President’s participation in works of the Bucharest NATO summit. According to the release, in his speech at the reunion, the President said Moldova made all the efforts to draw the attention of the world community to the uncertain situation concerning the conflict in the country’s Eastern area, which had remained a zone of instability affecting the regional security for 16 years. The head of the state said the Transnistrian issue, which was feeding a potential of insecurity and instability not only for Moldova’s territory, but also for the whole region, remained unsolved yet. The effects of this conflict at regional scale, the blockings it creates for Moldova’s modernization processes, as well as the interference of the Transnistrian problems with timely topics related to the international safety as the CAFE Treaty, NATO’s expansion, missile-defense systems in Europe or the Kosovo case are obvious, Vladimir Voronin specified. On the occasion of this especially important event for debating on safety issues, the President reconfirmed Moldova’s official position: “we want to identify a new viable solution for the Transnistrian issue, which should ground on demilitarization and interdiction of foreign military troops’ and objects’ stay on our national territory, in conformity with Moldova’s recognized status of neutrality, as well as on providing a fair status to the Transnistrian area within a sovereign, indivisible and territorially integral Moldova”. Vladimir Voronin also reiterated that after 17 years since proclaiming its independence, Moldova had wanted the backup of the world community to avoid destructive polemics concerning its national identity and present borders in order to focus on realizing its pro-European aspirations, as well as the most active possible involvement of all sides to recognize Moldova’s constitutional neutrality and to promote the country’s reintegration on the basis of the international law. At the NATO Summit, President Vladimir Voronin had discussions with Latvian President Valdis Zatlers, and with Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus on cooperation. According to the communiqué, the President was due back to Chisinau on Thursday evening. Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent, accredited to the Bucharest Summit, specifies the Moldovan journalists failed to get any information from the Moldovan official delegation on Moldova’s participation and position, as they were promised to get a communiqué later. The media accompanying the official delegation were thus favored, and media experts find this to be a new case of erroneous understanding of the mode of insuring the transparency of the Moldovan public officials.
