The General Police Inspectorate (IGP) is struggling to fill its ranks due to poor salaries and the high workloads. Despite this, this year the police have been able to reduce the average response time to 112 emergency calls by three minutes, stated IGP chief Viorel Cernăuțeanu during a press conference.

Cernăuțeanu named the staffing shortages, the increased workloads and the inadequate car fleet as the leading struggles faced by the IGP.

“We have a high number of vacancies relative to the needs of the police. Our continuous training program needs to be adapted to the challenges that the police face on a daily basis, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine. The car fleet operated by the police is obsolete and does not meet the needs of a quick response”, said the Moldovan Police chief.

Among the IGP’s priorities this year, Cernăuțeanu named a higher presence of officers on the street and digitization of the reporting process.
