MP Lilian Carp (PAS), chair of the National Security Committee, announced he is joining the Save Romania Union (USR) party.

Carp told a press conference the Moldovan law doesn’t prohibit holding multiple memberships of political parties, and that his decision to join USR, the third largest party in the Romanian Parliament, is a reflection of increased cooperation among the two countries in such areas as trade and judicial reform.

USR president Cătălin Drulă stated that for USR the relationship with the Republic of Moldova is a priority. He went on to recall a recent visit to Chisinau during which he met with President Maia Sandu. “I understood then how difficult Moldova’s situation is in terms of energy and security, with the war in Ukraine, with Putin’s aggression and blackmail. This autumn, I followed the topic of Romanian assistance to the Republic of Moldova”, noted the Romanian politician.

“The problems of Romanians on both sides of the Prut River can be solved by unification inside the European Union. Moldova’s integration into the EU is the national unification project that is suitable for the 21st century, without borders, with a common currency, with common European legislation, also adopted here, in Chisinau, with the same Romanian language, with opportunities for young people from Romania and the Republic of Moldova”, added Drulă.

USR vice president Dan Barna welcomed Carp’s decision to join, describing it as having a “deeply symbolical meaning”. He added that the involvement of Moldovans in Romanian politics is a “much needed step”, and that USR will be present not only in Chisinau, but also in all the districts of the Republic of Moldova.

The USR branch in Chisinau is estimated to number about 20 members, but according to the party, a much greater number of Moldovans with dual citizenship are registered as members in Romania.
