Parliament has denounced the Convention on the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States. A draft law to this effect was adopted with 55 votes of the PAS group. The Bloc of Communists and Socialists criticized the measure, insisting that the agreement must be preserved.

Ruslan Bolboceanu, state secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, noted that Moldova signed the Convention on October 23, 1997. Its main goals are the protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms, monitoring the development of democracy and electoral rights, as well as fighting new security threats and challenges. With Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, achieving these objectives is impossible, said Bolboceanu. After consulting the president of Moldova and the Government, the Moldovan Parliament came up with the proposal to denounce the treaty.

BCS lawmaker Vlad Batrîncea declared that the measure was an attempt by the government to invent a foreign enemy so as to compensate for its inability to deliver results in any area. He added that the withdrawal will have economic consequences for the country, as well as for Moldovan citizens living in CIS states.
