Parliament passed a draft decision by which 2013 was declared the European Year of Citizens. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Popov said the activities that will be carried out on this occasion are important for the people who tend towards the European integration and want to know more about the present and future of Europe, IPN reports.

The official stressed that the decision must be adopted, given the Moldovans’ aspiration to become fully-fledged members of the European family, so that the people are informed about the significance of the integration process and how they can take part in it.

Another objective is to increase awareness of the European values and to develop the participative civic spirit so that the people, especially the young ones, become involved in the achievement of the strategic European integration objective.

2013 was declared the European Year of Citizens by a decision of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe.
