The midwives in Moldova were assured by the authorities that they will have better work conditions and will enjoy the possibility of receiving continuous training at a center that will be opened soon. In the first Congress of Midwives held on May 8-9, Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovici said the health of the mother and child is the concern not only of the medical institutions, but also of the authorities, IPN reports.

“In the recent period, the state policy on the quality of medical services changed radically. A number of major projects are being implemented. The medical institutions are provided with modern equipment. There was adopted the Reproduction Law that offers more chances to those who want to have a baby,” said Liliana Palihovici.

Deputy Health Minister Octavian Grama said the provision of medical services of a high quality is a top priority of the Health Ministry. “I thank all the midwives who remained to work in Moldova and make sure that their services are of the highest quality,” he stated.

UNFPA Director for Moldova Ian McFarlane called on the Government and the state institutions to encourage natality in Moldova and to reduce maternal mortality by ensuring medical services of a high quality. He said it is very important that the Association of Midwives of Moldova should become a member of the International Confederation of Midwives so as to ensure experience exchange and continuous improvement.

The First Congress of Midwives titled “Health services of a high quality provided by midwives” was organized on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Association of Midwives of Moldova.

There are about 700 midwives in Moldova.
