President Maia Sandu says that today, when Ukraine marks Independence Day, is a day full of meaning for the neighboring and friendly country that is now fighting to preserve its identity and right to exist as an independent country. Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița also sent a message stating that today the only acceptable congratulation for Ukraine is the wish for peace.

“The war started by Russia against Ukraine destroyed dozens of cities, caused thousands of victims, drove millions of people from their homes. But this unjust and bloody war did not break the spirit of Ukrainians. The spirit of a free people cannot be broken. Today we celebrate, together with the Ukrainians, this spirit. Through this sacrifice, Ukraine is also fighting for our freedom. Moldova remains with the Ukrainians from now on, following the European path that our countries have chosen. Through solidarity, we will defend our freedom and ensure a better future for our people, in the family of European states”, declared Maia Sandu in a message published on social media.

Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița noted at the beginning of the Government meeting that it has been six months since Ukraine is the victim of a violent war that daily leads to loss of human lives, enormous destruction and catastrophic costs for millions of families in the neighboring state. “Today is the Independence Day of Ukraine, a country that has the thoughts and prayers of billions of people. For our country this war brings enormous costs and risks. Our people hear the sounds of the bombs, they shelter refugees, they watch alongside all of humanity as fighting and bombings take place in the neighboring state”, said the prime minister.

According to her, in these moments it is difficult to congratulate Ukraine, because it is unimaginable to celebrate while the cities are being attacked by rockets. “We wish our Ukrainian neighbors that this ordeal ends and that they return to peaceful life as soon as possible, to the reconstruction of the country for the prosperity and well-being of every citizen”, added Natalia Gavrilița.

On August 24 august, Ukraine marks 31 years since it proclaimed its independence.
