The Government of Moldova expressed its readiness to have the European Union as intermediary in neutralizing Romania’s aggressive policy and making it observe the EU’s common foreign policy so as to stabilize the Moldovan-Romanian relations on the basis of the unanimously recognized international law. The statement was published on the website of the state agency Moldpres on May 19.
The Government reacted to Romanian President Traian Basescu’s statement made at the forum of Romanian and Moldovan local authorities, held at Piatra Neamt on May 15. “We consider the signing of a border treaty that will make the Romanian president a partner of Ribbentrop and Molotov as useless,” Traian Basescu said at the forum.
The Moldovan authorities are dissatisfied with the fact that “Romania refuses to sign the Basic Political Treaty and Border Treaty with Moldova, massively grants Romanian nationality to Moldovan citizens and actively interferes in the internal political process”.
“All the steps taken by Romania in relation to Moldova indisputably discredit the organizational and diplomatic efforts made by the European Union during many years with the aim of solving the Transnistrian dispute and modernizing Moldova according to the European standards,” says the Moldovan Government’s statement, quoted by Moldpres.
The executive says that it is ready to defend its independence and sovereignty in accordance with the unanimously recognized norms and principles of the international law and is convinced that the concerted support of all the European institutions and organizations will enable Moldova to continue the European modernization and reintegration efforts.
At the end of his speech on May 15, the president of Romania said that he does not teach lessons to the neighboring state (Moldova), voicing hope that this difficult moment in the bilateral relations will be overcome for the benefit of both of the sides, especially for the citizens’ benefit.
