The 25 employees of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, who were deployed to Greece to help extinguish the wildfires there, began their mission this morning. Among firefighters’ tasks are not to allow the fire to spread to the other side of the mount in Prokopion Region, Evia Island, to localize the hotbeds of fire in the areas in charge and to take exploration action in the affected areas, IPN reports.
According to a press release of the Inspectorate, the Moldovan rescuers got to Prokopion Region, Evia Island in southern Greece on August 10. They stopped at an international camp, being helped by Greek liaison officers. In the morning of August 11, they were assigned the first tasks. They explored the area and determined that the wildfires affected large areas of forests and damaged the GSM antennas in the area.
Within the mission that started today, the Moldovan firefighters and rescuers will work in two shifts of six hours each. They work in concert with mates from Romania. Both of the teams based their Command Centers at a school in Prokopion Region from where they go on mission.
The 25 rescuers and firefighters from the Republic of Moldova went on their first international mission to help the local authorities to extinguish the devastating fires in Greece three days ago. The request to aid Greece came through the European Union’s Civic Protection Mechanism.
