Moldovan farmers will receive fodder from UN project

Drought-stricken households in Moldova, including settlements on the left bank of the Nistru, will receive feed for domestic livestock as part of the UN project “Relief and Technical Assistance Response to the Drought in Moldova”. The project, by means of its implementing partner ACSA, will select the recipients – 15,000 families. The lists of beneficiaries will be counterchecked by district and national commissions. Gordon Biggar, UN Drought Response Project Coordinator, explains that the assistance could also be extended to provide the families of farmers with corn seed, fertilizers and diesel oil for spring farming. Aid packages consisting of 10 kilograms of corn seed, 100 kilograms of fertilizers and 10 litres of diesel oil will be distributed to 117 families. In addition, in the course of the next few months the UN project will distribute food packages to pregnant and nursing women that live in the regions most affected by drought. The Project “Relief and Technical Assistance Response to the Drought in Moldova” was launched in September and covers a six-month timeframe. The cost of the project amounts to a total of $8 million. The project is implemented with the financial support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), the Dutch Government, the Norwegian Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).
