Members of the Green Ecologist Party, the National Environment Center of Moldova and the Green Party of Romania jointly staged a flashmob meeting in front of the Romanian Embassy on August 9. They protested against the use of cyanide for getting gold in Rosia Montana and addressed an open letter to the President of Romania Traian Basescu, asking him to take attitude in this case. At the same hour, the ecologists from Romania protested in front of the Romanian Government, IPN reports.

Chairman of the Green Ecologist Party Anatolie Prohnitchi told the press that the Moldovan ecologists fully support the campaign “Save Rosia Montana”. The environmentalist activists for years have fought to preserve the natural patrimony of Romania and to guarantee the rights of the people living in the area.

“We consider that the devastation of the eco-cultural patrimony by destroying the historical and natural monuments is a crime that cannot take place in the 21st century, in a country that is an EU member state,” said Anatolie Prohnitchi.

National Environment Center of Moldova head Ina Coseru said it is very dangerous to use cyanide for obtaining gold. “It is important to take a decision about this method that is not at all ecological and that can destroy a large part of the environment. We must act together. The people should realize that this is a danger to their health,” said Ina Coseru.

Rosia Montana is a mine settlement in the Apuseni Mountains in Alba county of Romania’s Transylvania. The Rosia River is rich in minerals. The village has large underground resources of gold. That’s why a large part of Rosia Montana was bought by a Canadian mining company in 1997. A part of the village will be destroyed in order to create cyanide lakes that can have disastrous consequences for nature and the people living there.
