In 2007, Moldovan currency market turnover constituted the equivalent of nearly $5.7 billion, increasing by about $1.14 billion or by 25% more than in 2006, when the currency market turnover constituted the equivalent of nearly $4.56 billion, Info-Prim Neo reports, with reference to National Bank data. In the foreign exchange market turnover make-up, 67.3% were held by the US dollar, 28.1% – by euro, 3.24% – by the Russian rouble, 0.47% – by the Swiss franc, 0.3% – by the pound, 0.28% – by the Ukrainian hrivna, 0.19% – by the Romanian leu, 0.02% – by other currencies. Over the year 2007, the daily average turnover constituted the equivalent of $16.8 m, increasing with $3.3 m, or by 24.8% against the previous year, when it made up the equivalent of $13.5 m. The total turnover on the internal foreign exchange market totalled the equivalent of nearly $4.2 billion, by 23.4% more than in 2006. The share of the interbank market turnover in the total turnover made up 27%, increasing by 2.8 percentage points compared with the previous year. In 2007, the net volume of NBM transactions on the internal currency market totalled nearly $367.3 m, including $362.2 m direct purchase of US dollars, and other currencies – the equivalent of $5.02 m and cash operations – in the equivalent of $0.02 m. The net purchases of foreign currency against Moldovan lei, performed by the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) on the interbank market increased by $245.3 m compared with 2006 ($122.1 m). The net sales of foreign currency against Moldovan lei, performed by the NBM with the Finance and other Ministries during the year 2007 made up $5.4 m, decreasing by $63.7 m against the previous year ($69.1 m).
