The Parliament repealed Friday, December 21, the legislative provision which compelled companies to package their products in glass containers.
Under the existing legislation, the share of glass packaging had to make up at least 50% of total until 1 January 2007. As this provision has not been executed, one month ago the Parliament extended the deadline until 1 January 2010.
When examining the bill at second reading, MPs remarked that the Government had not created a national system for waste management and for the coordination of actions for glass waste collection and recycling. Meanwhile, processing companies are utilising single-use packaging, and the shift to glass packaging would cause losses.
The parliamentary Commission for Public Administration, Ecology and Territorial Development ascertained that the shift to glass packages is unattainable today.
According to experts, more than eight million euros are necessary to ensure that companies pass to other types of packaging than glass containers.
