Moldovan children send message to UN secretary general on occasion of 60th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The World Organization of Talented Children (WOTC), with its quarter in Chisinau, sent a message to the secretary general of the United Nations Organization on Monday, December 8, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary from adopting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, marked on December 10, Info-Prim Neo reports. Upon the organization’s request, about 200 children formed a “vivid chain” on 31 August street, between Banulescu Bodoni and Sfatul Tarii streets, and transmitted from hand to hand the envelope with the message to the UN secretary general. Asked by Info-Prim Neo, most children, pupils from different schools and lyceums from Chisinau, said they didn’t know the reason why they were participating in this action, and they were taken there by their teachers. On the other hand, the WOTC president, the writer, Renata Verejanu, stated for the media that the action was attended by 1,000 WOTC’s volunteers from different schools, who accepted to come in spite of the rain and the cold outside. According to Renata Verejanu, through this message, the WOTC wanted to convey that “the Moldovan civil society and media know the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and take stance toward the violations of its provisions.” We want to transmit the idea that, through communication, joining together, we can change something,” she said. At the UN House to Chisinau, the envelope was read by Edwin Berry, the UN advisor for human rights in Moldova. Edwin Berry reminded that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted on December 10, 1948, was the first document, which lists the rights of each citizen. “The Universal Declaration is the most translated document in the history of international treaties. It is the document which was the basis of over 90 national constitutions,” Berry said. He specified Moldova has signed 5 of those nine instruments of the declaration, and is to sign other two. The World Organization of Talented Children is a network which joins over 40 local, national, and international NGOs, according to the WOTC‘s site. The organization has a participation statute at the Council of Europe. It launched a 'Peace Culture Caravan' in Moldova in 1993, and at the international level in 1995.
