None of the eight Moldovans who competed in the World Boxing Championship in Almaty managed to qualify for the finals. Veaceslav Gojan and Dumitru Galagot were the last to be eliminated, IPN reports.
Former European champion Veaceslav Gojan (56 kg class) was beaten in the 1/8 finals by Vladimir Nikitin of Russia Dumitru Galagot (64 kg) lost to Lithuania’s Evaldas Petrauskas, who medaled at the last Olympic Games.
Moldova was also represented at the competition by Petru Ciobanu (81 kg), Vasile Belous (69 kg), Alexei Zavatin (91 kg), Alexandru Riscan (52 kg), Victor Carapchevski (75 kg), and Vladimir Cheles (91 kg).
The World Boxing Championship in Kazakhstan closes on October 27. It brought together 576 boxers from 116 countries.
Boxing is a traditional sport in Moldova. The national squad headed by Petru Caduc won two bronze medals at the Olympic Games of 2000 and 2008 through Vitalie Grusac and Veaceslav Gojan. At the European Championships this year, Dumitru Galogot and Petru Ciobanu won silver.
