The Moldovan athletes who won medals at the European Boxing Championships this year were awarded by the Boxing Federation of Moldova on July 2. European vice champion Dumitru Galagot and his coach Petru Caduc received by 50,000 lei, while Petru Ciobanu, who medaled bronze, and his coach Leonid Tomsa were offered by 25,000 lei. The prizes were handed over by the president of the Boxing Federation Vasile Chirtoca, IPN reports.

“We took part in the European Champs with a complete lineup for the first time. The results are very good given that we have a young team with prospects,” stated Vasile Chirtoca.

“Our expectations were met and Moldova took the seventh position out of 37 participating countries,” said the national team coach Petru Caduc.

Dumitru Galagot and Petru Ciobanu said they didn’t expect to achieve such results, but hope to accomplish more in the future. In several days, the Moldovan pugilists will go to the World Universiade in Russia.

The best results among the Moldovan boxers were achieved by Vitalie Grusac, who ranked third at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, and Veaceslav Gojan, who medaled bronze at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
