The Moldovan Bar Association will hold on October 24 an open-doors day and the interested public may use this occasion to get free legal advice from the Bar's lawyers, Info-Prim Neo reports. Bar chairman Gheorghe Amihalachioaie told a news conference on Wednesday the open-doors day will take place in the spirit of the events dedicated to the observance of the Layers Day and the European Day of Civil justice on October 19 and 25, respectively. At the same conference, Gheorghe Amihalachioaie has announced that the Moldovan Bar Association will demand the abrogation on the Bar Law, which, in his words, doesn't work in the best interest of the citizens. “Much of the government earmarks in this sector are not actually spent on hiring public defenders for people who cannot afford a private lawyer, but on maintaining lawyers' offices and the National Bar Council. These expenses just fuel bureaucracy in Moldova ”, declared Amihalachioaie. According to him, pro bono work must be every lawyer's concern, and not the occupation of certain offices or institutions. Amihalachioaie went on to add that lawyers in Moldova are being treated like rivals of the government. The reason behind this attitude, he thinks, is the fact that the bar is helping people win cases against the government at the European Court of Human Rights. “The bar is not a political institution, but one which represents citizens before administrative and law bodies and which participates in the process of making justice triumph”, Amihalachioaie added. The Bar Law took effect on July 1.
