“Moldova is willing to sign the Border Treaty with Romania even tomorrow,” the Moldovan Foreign Ministry informs. On July 16, it sent a verbal note to the Romanian Foreign Ministry asking for an exact date and inviting Minister Cristian Diaconescu to Chisinau to sign the Border Treaty, Info-Prim Neo learns from a communique by the Moldovan Foreign Ministry. At the same time, the Moldovan Government asks the UE to appreciate Romania's statements and actions, “which systematically interferes into Moldova's internal affairs.” The EU is asked to set up a committee to mediate the Moldo-Romanian problems. “We are certain this will hasten signing the Moldo-Romanian Basic Treaty, will contribute to settle other issues related to visas and citizenship, and will stop the practice of Romania's interfering into Moldova's internal affairs,” the Ministry specifies. According to the Moldovan side, “signing the treaty would allow Romania to focus on its own problems, would offer the opportunity to unfold the electoral campaign in Romania not by challenging and worsening the relations between our states and peoples.” Romanian president Traian Basescu has repeatedly stated he sees it useless to sign a boarder treaty, which would make “the head of the Romanian state a partner of Ribbentrop and Molotov.”
