Judo player Cristina Budescu ranked fifth at the World University Games taking place in Gwangju, South Korea. For now this is the best result achieved by the Moldovan squad, IPN reports.

The Moldovan athlete competed in the 48 kg category. After winning against Savita Gurung (India), Joana Stankiewicsz (Poland) and Anne-Sophie Jura (Belgium), Budescu lost in the semifinals to Gabriela Chibana (Brazil), while in the match for the bronze she was beaten by Funa Tonaki (Japan). Judo player Valeriu Duminica scored two victories and suffered two defeats, failing thus to medal.

Archers Dan Olaru and Alexandra Mirca finished 17th and, respectively, 26th. Swimmer Alina Bulmag ranked 27th in the 100 m breaststroke, while Tatiana Chisca finished the same race the 29th. Aliona Jelachi ranked 40th in the women’s fencing competition, while athlete Olesea Cojuhari qualified for the final of the 400 m race.

The Moldovan tennis and taekwondo players are yet to enter the competition. The World University Games close on July 14.
