Agriculture in the Republic of Moldova needs to be modernized. The model of selling primary production, straight from the fields, is outdated. It is necessary to strengthen the processing-consumption chain. The statement belongs to Prime Minister Ion Chicu, and was made during the festive ceremony dedicated to the Agriculture and Processing Industry Workers’ Day, IPN reports.

According to Ion Chicu, domestic production has to be found more often on the shelves of sales outlets in the country, so as not to import so much anymore. For this, it is necessary to modernize, technologize, subsidize processing enterprises, and also to provide tax incentives to create added value. According to the bill, projects need to be identified to attract young people into agriculture and to develop new products.

The prime minister proposed to the country’s business environment to have a meeting, with the participation of the top management of the country, and business associations, on December 17, to discuss the main issues of the country's economy, but also short term development plans.

Attending the event, President Igor Dodon said that it was necessary to consolidate agricultural land, not to admit that these land lots become property of foreign citizens. "Thank you for choosing to be engaged in agriculture in the Republic of Moldova," said the head of state. Igor Dodon also said that, soon, the former headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, where the Chisinau Court, Centru headquarters, is currently located, could return to the Ministry.

Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and the Environment, Ion Perju, has said that for the Republic of Moldova the agri-food sector is certainly a top priority on the government’s agenda. "We will focus intensely on the intelligent use of natural, financial, institutional, and human resources too. It will not be easy because there are many challenges, such as climate change, economic fluctuations or labor shortage,” said the minister.

Ion Perju gave assurances that the Ministry would support investments in agriculture to facilitate the activity of those engaged in the field and to create new jobs in rural areas. "Moldova's agriculture has a future, and you have shown that," the minister said.

Agriculture and Processing Industry Workers’ Day was established in 1994.
