There are two types of agriculture in Moldova – competitive agriculture based on modern equipment, comparable with that of the Western countries, and hoe-based agriculture, Minister of Agriculture Vasile Bumacov said in a meeting of the Chisinau Press Club, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to the minister, Moldova does not yet have something better than agriculture. The country became known abroad owing to the brands Cricova, Purcari, Bucuria, Aroma and others. About 50% of Moldova’s exports represent agrifood products.
The agribusiness is very difficult, said Vasile Bumacov. One should work for many years to become competitive. “How can we compare our farmers with those from the countries with developed economies who pass the skills from generation to generation. In our country, this spirit in whole generations was destroyed and we started everything from the very beginning. We now go through a partially natural and partially artificial selection process. Some farmsteads appear, while others disappear. In a while things will change. There will remain only those who are able to develop farming,” stated the minister.
Vasile Bumacov also said that the lack of continuity in reforming agriculture makes the selection process hard. “We should focus on a certain period and chose several areas where we can do something. But we must promote policies and implement them during many years. Even if all the donors help us, the situation cannot be changed in two-three years,” he said.
