Moldova wins sensational victory against Montenegro

The national football team of Moldova ended the 2014 World Cup preliminaries with a 5 – 2 victory against Montenegro. For the first time, Ion Caras’s team scored five goals in an official match and won away, IPN reports.

Montenegro lost any chance to qualify after suffering a 1-4 defeat to England. Moldova yet intended to take revenge after being beaten by Montenegro in Chisinau by 0-1. There same score was recorded in Podgorica in the first half, the score being opened by Antoniuc.

After the pause, Jovetic scored with a penalty. The other goals were scored by Armas, Sidorenko, Ionita and again Antoniuc. Jovetic, who was bought by Manchester City for €26 million in summer, scored the second goal for Montenegro.

“It was the nicest match played in the recent preliminaries. I perfectly intuited which of the players to summon. I asked them to put pressure and they did their best in the field,” coach Ion Caras told a news conference.

Moldova scored 11 points in the preliminaries, by two fewer than Poland, which finished fourth. England qualified for the World Championship, while Ukraine will compete in the playoffs.

Moldova’s team in Podgorica included Cebanu, Armas, Golovatenko, Racu, Ionita, Gatcan, Antoniuc, Dedov, Gheorghiev, Bordian, Sidorenco (Frunza 84).
