Moldova wins first medal at Rio Olympics

Serghei Tarnovschi won Moldova’s first medal at the Olympic Games in Rio. He finished 3rd in the 1000m canoe sprint contest, with a result of 4:00.852, IPN reports.

The 19 year old was bested only by Germany’s Sebastian Brendel (3:56.926) and Brazil’s Isaquias Queiroz (3:58.529).

Tarnovschi will receive 2 million lei for winning Moldova an Olympic bronze medal. He will also compete in the 1000m canoe double event, together with his elder brother, Oleg Tarnovschi. Both athletes were born in Lvov, Ukraine, but accepted the proposal of Nicolae Juravschi, head of the Moldovan Olympic Committee, to represent out country.

So far, 73 countries have won at least one medal at the Olympics. The ranking is topped by the USA team with 75 medals.
