A new Naval Transport Code in the Republic of Moldova, which will include provisions of the EU legislation and of the international conventions to which the Republic of Moldova is a party, presenting real prospects for the development of the sector, will be designed with the support of the USAID Moldova Institutional and Structural Reforms Activity, IPN reports.

The new Naval Code will be developed by a group of national and international experts, together with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development and the Naval Agency of the Republic of Moldova.

Updating and aligning the legislation on water transport with the EU standards is essential for the advancement in the European path of the Republic of Moldova in Europe, it is said in a press release issued by MISRA. At the same time, a new legal framework will come with visions and prospects for the development of the naval sector, which has enormous potential to contribute to the country’s economic growth in the context of regional needs to diversify logistics options for transporting goods.

Moldova is a party to at least seven international conventions in the maritime sector, which require the adjustment of the national regulatory framework to international good practices to guarantee the safety of life at sea, the prevention of pollution and the living and working conditions on board the ship. Compliance with these standards is essential for maintaining the safety of shipping, protecting the environment and ensuring compliance with international regulations.

The Nistru and Prut rivers are currently navigable only on particular sectors, due to siltation and the failure to carry out the works to maintain the guaranteed navigability for safe navigation. Thus, naval transport is used at a very low level, compared to the Soviet period. The development of the field would provide new economic opportunities for the growth of freight transport at national, regional and international levels.
