An Ionization Technology Center will be set up in Moldova under a tripartite agreement signed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and the Hungarian Institute of Isotopes “Izotop” in Vienna last week, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the Academy of Sciences' press service. The Center will create new opportunities for medicine, agriculture and research. The agreement envisions making large investments in creating a multi-purpose irradiator for providing irradiation services in Moldova. The IAEA will provide a grant of 720,000 euros for delivering the ionization technology produced by the Institute “Izotop”, which was selected by an international tender contest organized by the Agency. Moldova will build the Center and related facilities. The Ionization Technology Center will enable the medical institutions and the economic entities to use irradiation sterilization technology. It is planned that about 15% of the total irradiation time will be used for research. The talks over the given agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency started in 2006.
