Moldova will further have the support of the United States provided that it continues reforms, fixes its economic and financial issues and improves the situation in the judiciary. This was stated by Congressman Steve Chabot, Chairman of the House Small Business Committee and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, at a meeting with Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti.
Steve Chabot's visit to Moldova is part of a tour that also includes Latvia, Hungary and Estonia. “The fact that I started my tour with your country shows the particular interest and support the United States has for Moldova on its European path”, said Steve Chabot.
Nicolae Timofti appreciated the support showed by the United States to Moldova, including with continuing its European course. The President thanked Congressman Chabot for the successful implementation of the MCC compact which helped to build roads and irrigation systems, adding that he hopes the compact will be continued for Moldova.
Another issue discussed during the meeting was the need for Moldova to increase its energy independence from Russia. In this context, the President mentioned the necessity of extending the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline to reach Chisinau, with the support of Romania and the European Union.
