The Republic of Moldova will exchange data with other states for the verification of asset and interest declarations submitted by public officials. The Cabinet approved a draft law that stipulates a mechanism to create conditions for identifying and investigating properties, businesses or bank accounts held by public officials abroad, IPN reports.

It goes to the ratification of the International Treaty on Exchange of Data for the Verification of Asset Declarations. Thus, the new norms allow the exchange of information between the integrity institutions of Moldova and the other signatory countries.

According to the Ministry of Justice, some of the civil servants currently avoid declaring the assets and personal interests they have in other states, and the institutions that verify integrity are unable to access the information possessed by the authorities of those states.

The relevant institutions do not have a mechanism to ensure the exchange of data with authorities abroad. This materializes only in criminal cases, through letters rogatory.

The Treaty will make it possible for the parties to exchange information taken from public authorities' databases on taxes, bank accounts, financial securities, activities, companies, immovable property and other property rights.

"The main purpose of the Treaty is to prevent and combat corruption by detecting abuses and strengthening the integrity of public officials," said the Ministry of Justice.

The International Treaty on Exchange of Data for the Verification of Asset Declarations was signed by the Republic of Moldova in October 2023, and the draft on the ratification of this document is to be adopted by Parliament.
