Moldova will continue to be exposed to massive flows of internal and external mobility, as well as migration-generated financial flows. Migration will be fueled by the consolidation and restructuring of the agricultural sector, which will generate a excess of workforce and the people will look for jobs and better living conditions in cities or abroad. These are some of the conclusions of a sociological study on Moldovan migration conducted within the NEXUS Moldova initiative, IPN reports.

Nicolaas de Zwager, director and founder of IASCI, the agency implementing the NEXUS project, said on Thursday, December 18, that for Moldova migration is not a threat but an opportunity. “NEXUS, by cooperating with private, public and civil society partners, works directly with Moldovan migrants to boost the development impact of migrations, while also tackling the negative consequences of migration. Moldovan migration and its challenges and opportunities are more complex than commonly thought. It's a mix of external and internal mobility, with return migrations of the labor force, all of it taking place in a transitioning economy. Migration, while often a challenge for the involved people and communities, is part of this transition”, said Nicolaas de Zwagger.

Pirkka Tapiola, head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, noted that talks regarding migration policies were an important part of the dialogue between Moldova and the EU within the partnership for mobility and, in a broader context, of the dialogue about visas. According to the ambassador, NEXUS fits perfectly among the tens of bilateral and multilateral projects that have already been implemented or are currently underway within this partnership.

The study also shows that many long-term migrants from Moldova maintain a strong attachment to their country of origin and many of them express an intention to return after they accumulate sufficient resources or achieve other priority goals. The authors of the research recommend the creation of employment opportunities on a broader scale, because most people want a decently-paid job. Also, it's necessary to offer access to long-term financing and to create opportunities for successful investments because migrants need support to achieve their personal goals.

A NEXUS Virtual center was opened at nexusnet.md, where visitors can find a lot of useful information that will help them take more rational decisions and act more decidedly, regardless whether they plan on going abroad, returning to Moldova or staying at home. They can also ask questions directly on the website. Each member of NEXUS Virtual center will receive vast and reliable information from authorized sources for free. Moreover, they can find solutions for their specific needs with the help of the center's partners. Each case will be treated separately, but solved by a whole team.
