The Republic of Moldova wants a deeper level of cooperation with the European Union in order to ensure socio-economic stability, restore the national economy and modernize local communities according to European standards. This was stated Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu at the Council of Foreign Affairs of the European Union, a meeting in which he participated on the invitation of the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.

The foreign ministers of the EU member states spoke about ways in which the European Union could provide additional and immediate support to Moldova for managing the influx of refugees through relocation to European states and provision of financial assistance to ensure decent conditions for the refugees remaining in Moldova, according to a press release issued by the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.

“We also pointed out the need for closer cooperation to ensure economic and energy resilience, given the authorities’ efforts to mitigate the economic impact of the war in our neighborhood, which directly affected our country’s trade”, said Popescu.

In relation to the formal application for EU membership signed by Moldova on March 3, Nicu Popescu stated: “Our country is a European state, with a European history, we speak a European language and we have a European identity. We have a strong mandate to bring our country to the EU. The support of the member states for our European perspective will be a powerful message of support for our irreversible European path, an integration in an area of freedom, stability and peace”.
