Moldova and the UK intend to more thoroughly examine the opportunity of facilitating trips. In a news conference on May 5, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the UK has its own visa commitments that are separate from the Schengen Area. “We will probably consider certain changes in our commitments,” said the official, without providing more details, IPN reports.

The British official said the UK supports the enlargement of the EU. “I launch an important message for the Moldovans, that they are welcome as visitors of the UK,” stated William Hague.

He also said that Moldova deserves having a European future and it must determine its future course in an independent and democratic way. “The UK opposes strongly any pressure from outside and the violations of sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Association Agreement is not a threat for Russia,” said the British Foreign Secretary. He approved of the results achieved by the Moldovan government in fighting corruption and in the justice sector.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Natalia Gherman said that the Moldovans who want to travel to the UK still need visas, but time has come to discuss certain concessions so as to increase the mobility of the people of the two states.

The two officials discussed the bilateral commercial and economic relations and the regional context. Natalia Gherman said the situation in Ukraine arouses concern and the Moldovan and British authorities will join efforts so as to express common positions on the developments in Ukraine.

William Hague has been in Chisinau for the second time.
