Moldova will expand its consular presence in the United States of America. A Consulate General of the Republic of Moldova will be opened in Chicago in the first half of next year, IPN reports.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi announced that "the decision comes in response to multiple requests received from Moldovan citizens who settled in the region".

The opening of the Consulate General in Chicago is an important step in supporting the Moldovan community in the U.S. and in strengthening the bilateral relations between the two states, the Moldovan politician noted.

The announcement was made after a meeting of Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi with U.S. Acting Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs John Bass in Washington.

The officials also considered extending the strategic dialogue between Moldova and the US. Mihai Popșoi underlined the initiation of negotiations for a strategic partnership, with a focus on security, energy resilience and economic development.

Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu are on a working visit to the U.S. until December 9 to strengthen the Moldova-U.S. relations.
