Moldova will contract the transborder project “Prevention and protection against floods in the upper Siret and Prut Rivers”. The project forms part of eight major investment projects to the value of €44 million of the Joint Operational Program Romania – Ukraine – Moldova, IPN reports.

In a news conference held in Chisinau, Daniela Popescu, deputy head of the Joint Managing Authority of the Joint Operational Program Romania – Ukraine – Moldova 2007-2013, said the project “Prevention and protection against floods in the upper Siret and Prut Rivers” has a budget of €9 million. The applicant for the project is the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change of Romania, together with seven partners from Ukraine and Moldova.

The project will enable to set up automated monitoring stations in the three countries, to modernize the early warning system, to rehabilitate the Stanca-Costesti barrage and to draw up maps of the flooded areas in the Prut-Siret region.

Within another project of the program, there will be examined the possibility of Ukraine and Moldova joining the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity. After the €6 million project is implemented, the electricity systems of the three states will be connected synchronically, enabling thus energy transfer.

The third project of major importance, to the value of €3.8 million, envisions the modernization of the border infrastructure between Ukraine and Romania.

The other five projects are under implementation. Among them is the €6.7 million project to improve the Mobile Emergency, Resuscitation and Extrication Service SMURD and the €3.5 million IMPEFO project (Improvement of Cross-Border Cooperation between Moldova and Romania on Petroleum and Food Products) that aims to promote efficient border management through modernizing common border points by provision of mobile laboratories and through cooperation between customs services.

The construction of the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline is another project of the Joint Operational Program, to the value of €26 million. Another €5 million project refers to the infrastructure of communication between Romania and Moldova.

The Joint Operational Program Romania – Ukraine – Moldova 2007-2013 benefits from European financing through the European Neighborhood and Partnership Instrument.
