The Republic of Moldova will request assistance from the European Union in the form of fertilizers. A letter to this effect is to be issued urgently by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry. This was announced by Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița at the beginning of the Government’s meeting on Wednesday, IPN reports.
Gavrilița said she broached food security matters with European Council President Charles Michel on his visit to Chisinau, as this is expected to become a global issue as a result of the war in Ukraine.
Minister of Agriculture Viorel Gherciu stated that efforts are being made to solve the problem of fertilizers, in particular to diversify the range of suppliers. A visit to Azerbaijan was made in February, where negotiations on fertilizer exports to Moldova were launched, and a new visit to Baku is due on Thursday. Other sources of fertilizer supplies have been identified, as well, including Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Delivery routes have also been diversified.
According to Gherciu, it’s important that farmers get affordable fertilizers to avoid a surge in consumer prices. In the cost basket, fertilizers are estimated to have a share of 20%.
