The Moldovan and Romanian authorities set a common goal – Moldova should become an EU member by 2019, when Romania will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union. Related statements were made by Prime Minister Iurie Leanca and his Romanian counterpart Victor Ponta, who are in Sculeni on a joint visit, IPN reports.

Iurie Leanca said he is confident that the EU borders will extend to the east over the next 4-5 years and this will become possible with the help of the European and Romanian partners. He underlined the necessity of continuing the justice sector reform and the fight against corruption. He also said that the Romanian gas will cross the Prut by August 26 at the latest.

Victor Ponta said the liberalization of the visa regime is another step taken by Moldova towards the EU. No border between Romania and Moldova should exist by 2019, when Moldova can become an EU member. Romania will be near Moldova on its path to the EU. “Times will be difficult, but it’s easier to overcome the obstacles when you are not alone. I wish the future generations not to have borders and visas that would separate them from the EU,” stated the Romanian Premier.

Iurie Leanca and Victor Ponta met in Sculeni village to mark the abolition of the EU visa requirements for Moldovans. They discussed with residents of Sculeni and then travelled to the Sculeni checkpoint and crossed the border without visas. From April 28, the Moldovans holding biometric passports can travel visa-free in the EU.
