The tendencies the last two weeks show that the Republic of Moldova passed the critical point of the current pandemic wave. Amid a decline in the number of persons hospitalized with COVID-19, the authorities are hopeful that the pressure exerted on the health system will be reduced. They yet warn the population that it is too early to relax as the behavior during the next period will determine the evolution of the pandemic situation nationwide, IPN reports.
Secretary of state at the Ministry of Health Svetlana Nicolaescu told a news conference that the current pandemic wave that started in Moldova in August has diminished. After reaching a peak in October, the number of COVID-19 cases decreased the last two weeks. As many as 8,208 new cases were recorded last week, which is a 16% decline on a week before.
“The national incidence rate for the last seven days was 220 cases per 100,000 people. We practically fell under the red alert level. We currently have five administrative units on red alert – the municipalities of Bălți and Chisinau and the districts of Vulcănești and Glodeni. We also have the Transnistrian region where the epidemic process is the most intense and where a significant number of new cases is witnessed,” stated Svetlana Nicolaescu.
Nationwide, 35 hospitals treat persons with COVID-19. The occupancy rate is under 80%, with 2,771 infected persons being currently hospitalized. Of the 341 persons who are under intensive therapy, 43 were put on a ventilator.
Even if the situation improved, the authorities remain concerned about the high number of deaths associated with the novel coronavirus. “As many as 309 deaths due to COVID-19 were recorded last week, up 5% on a week before. This situation is also due to the inertial effects. Persons who got infected when the new wave was at its peak now succumb to the disease. The death toll stands at over 8,100,” stated Svetlana Nicolaescu.
According to the Ministry of Health, Moldova so far has got 348,500 cases of COVID-19.
