Moldova needs to meet MCC eligibility criteria, including passing the control of corruption indicator and other factors, in order to be considered for a second Compact. The subject was discussed in a meeting of the U.S. Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Deputy Vice President Fatema Z. Sumar and Moldovan Interim Prime Minister Natalia Gherman on July 24, IPN reports.
According to the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau, during the July 24-25 visit, the MCC delegation participated in the launch of the Cosnita irrigation system, the largest of ten irrigation systems rehabilitated with MCC compact funds, and met with farmers and local beneficiaries. The delegation will also travel to portions of the 96 km M2 road from Sarateni to Soroca rebuilt by the MCC compact, visit local orchard growers, and meet with local officials.
Moldova and MCC signed a five-year, $262 million Compact aimed at reducing poverty and accelerating economic growth. It will be completed on September 1, 2015. The Compact focuses on irrigation reconstruction, access to agricultural finance, and the rehabilitation of an integral section of the country’s national road network.
