The Republic of Moldova will be unable to implement all the provisions of the Association Agreement with the EU without a transparent banking sector. The Moldovan government must adjust the legislation to the European standards so as to dissipate foreign donors’ concerns related to the raider attacks staged on a number of Moldovan banks, the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Ambassador Pirkka Tapiola said in a public debate, IPN reports.

In the same event, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said the National Bank of Moldova will have to consent to the sale of bank shares if the holding exhibited for sale is larger than 1%. A relevant initiative is worked out by the Government.

According to the Premier, in most of the EU member states, the transactions with shareholdings smaller than 10% are performed without the consent of the central bank. The situation in Moldova is different and there is a risk of dubious dealings in small shareholdings. In order to avoid such cases, the legislation in the financial-banking sector will be toughened up.
