Moldova celebrates the National Flag Day on April 27. Besides the people’s interpretations of the three colors of the flag, these colors are also based on a historical event, the deputy head of the Cultural Patrimony Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova Silviu Tabac has told Info-Prim Neo.

The blue, yellow and red flag was adopted during the revolution of 1848. It was designed by the French flag to show that the Romanians are a Latin people, as the French, and support the republican views, of republican states. But the white color of the flag was substituted with yellow. The colors of the national flag also have a heraldic meaning – blue is the color of air and sky, yellow is the color of sun, while red is the color of fire and blood.

The colors of Moldova’s flag are similar to those of the state flags of Romania, Andorra and Chad. “In the case of Romania, it is the same ethnic national tricolor that was inherited by both of the states. In the case of Chad, the colors coincided accidentally. The difference between the Romanian flag and the flag of Chad is the coat of the Romanian Socialist Republic. As to Andorra, the colors are related to the heraldic tradition of this state. There is no semantic confusion between the three flags,” said Silviu Tabac.

He also said that the coat of arms on Moldova’s flag makes it different from the national Romanian ethnic flag. “Romania is the promoter of this ethnicity and has a priority right to this flag. Moldova is a fragment of the whole Romanity. A difference was made by approving the coat – we have common roots, but own identity,” stated Silviu Tabac.

The nuances of the blue and the sizes of the flags of Romania and Moldova differ. Moldova’s flag has the ratio of 1:2, while Romania’s of 2:3.The flags of most of the states have the same size as Romania’s, even the EU flag. The flag of Moldova keeps the tradition of the Soviet flags and nobody thought to modify it.

The National Flag Day was instituted by Parliament on April 23, 2010. The tricolor was officially proclaimed the state flag on April 27, 1990 by the members of the first legislative body.
