The main target, for the moment, of the Republic of Moldova should be adhering to European values, not to European Union (EU), declared in Chisinau, the deputy chairman of the Romanian Senate, Teodor Melescanu, at the opening of the debates: “The Republic of Moldova and its Neighbors: Path to Europe”.
According to the politician, the most important thing made for accomplishing this goal was the declaration of the president Vladimir Voronin on April 4, 2005, when he mentioned about the distinct option of the Republic of Moldova to respect the recommendations of the Council of Europe (CoE). Until now however, made poor efforts to implement these recommendations, stated Melescanu.
The quoted source declared that the experience of Romania in the EU integration process is important both for Moldova and other states of this region. “It is important to avoid the mistakes made in Bucuresti and that is why it is worth to study the Romanian experience” emphasized the vice chairman of the Romanian Senate.
The message of Romania is that it will support the approach of Moldova towards European values. Romania is not indifferent the way things are evolving in its immediate neighborhood, added Melescanu.
Referring to the relationships of the Republic of Moldova with Romania, the Moldovan political analyst, Nicolae Chirtoaca, declared that it is important to overcome all stereotypes which were present for a long period in Moldova. The general priorities of both countries must be studied and analyzed, because good bilateral relationships have a great role in solving problems, said the analyst.
The debates, that will last for two days are organized by the Center of Regional Project on Ethnic Relations. This round table is the second of the series initiated from November 11 to 12 in Iasi, Romania. At the opening, MPs, statesmen from Bucharest and Chisinau, representatives of the civil society and of the academic circles from the both countries participated.
