The Republic of Moldova preserved a devoted supporter in Germany after the party of Chancellor Angela Merkel won the parliamentary elections and remained in power. The president of the Foreign Policy Association (APE) Victor Chirila believes that the Transnistrian conflict remains a priority in Germany’s foreign policy agenda. It is important that Moldova covers the reform path.

“Germany’s interest is to strengthen security in the European neighborhood and to show that such security problems can be solved in partnership with Germany. This idea remained in the minds of many German politicians and diplomats,” said Victor Chirila.

He considers that most probably, the party headed by Angela Merkel will form a coalition with the Social Democratic Party that is also an ally of Moldova. “Such a coalition advantages us. Both the Christian Democratic Union and the Social Democratic Party will form part of our supporters,” stated the foreign policy expert.

Angela Merkel’s party won 41.5% of the vote, which is the best result in the last 20 years. It fell short of an overall majority in the Bundestag. Thus, Angela Merkel is likely to be forced into a coalition with the next biggest party, the Social Democrats.
