Moldova is in the middle of 2006 Corruption Perceptions Index

Moldova is on the 81st position in the international ranking on Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). The ranking was performed by Passau University, Germany and include 163 countries of the world. The results of the ranking were publicized on Monday, November 6 at a press conference by the executive director of Transparency International-Moldova (TIM), Lilia Carasciuc. According to the cited source, CPI was performed on the base of 12 researches as regards the perception of corruption carried out by several international organizations and it ranks the countries at a scale from 0, meaning total corruption, to 10, meaning total lack of corruption. The best places in the ranking are held by Finland, followed by Island, New Zealand and Denmark, and the worst positions were given to Myanmar, Iraq and Guinea. The best ranked former soviet countries are the Baltic countries: Estonia (24), Lithuania (46) and Latvia (49). As regards CIS members, Moldova is 81st, followed by Ukraine (91), Russia (121). Romania is 84th. . The countries were CPI has improved compared with the last year are Algeria, Czech Republic, India, Japan, Latvia, Lebanon, Paraguay, Slovakia, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uruguay. CPI has worsened in Brazil, Cuba, Jordan, Laos, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia and USA. In Moldova, CPI evolved in 2006 from 2.9 to 3.2, which according to TIM is a significant progress in the field of preventing and combating corruption. More, CPI in Moldova exceeded the mean of the index estimated for CIS members, which is 2.5, fact that can be explained, according to Lilia Carasciuc by the improvement of the situation on counteracting corruption.
