The Republic of Moldova is the first country to sign the Security and Defense Partnership with the European Union. According to the authorities, this agreement will help the country strengthen defense, improve cybersecurity and counter the Russian attempts to interfere in democratic processes. The partnership was signed in Brussels by Prime Minister Dorin Recean and Vice-President of the European Commission, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, IPN reports.
“To build the Republic of Moldova’s resilience, Moldova today became the first country to sign a security partnership with the European Union. It is the first country and there will probably be many more to create a network of friends to help us establish solid security partnerships. This implies an increasingly close cooperation in areas such as cybersecurity, countering hybrid threats, training, capacity building and other new areas of cooperation,” Josep Borrell said at the conference held after the eighth meeting of the EU-Republic of Moldova Association Council.
In this connection, Prime Minister Recean reiterated that accession to the European Union is the best mechanism to ensure peace and stability for Moldova’s citizens. “As we get closer to this goal, we build our country’s resilience to the challenges we are facing,” noted the head of the Moldovan government.
According to him, this will increase the country’s aligning with the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy, strengthen assistance to the defense sector through the European Peace Facility, and Moldova will contribute more actively to European peace and security.
“Together with the European Union, the Republic of Moldova becomes stronger and more resilient both politically and economically. We are pleased to see the same openness from the Member States. Together with the European Union, the Republic of Moldova’s future is more competitive, peaceful and safe,” said Dorin Recean.
The eighth meeting of the Moldova-European Union Association Council took place on Tuesday in Brussels. They discussed the evolution of relations with the EU in terms of implementation of the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, as well as the progress of preparations for the opening of accession negotiations. The Agreement on Moldova's participation in the Programme for Employment and Social Innovation was also signed today.
The eighth meeting of the EU-Republic of Moldova Association Council took place on Tuesday in Brussels.
