Moldova is being hit by a new wave of COVID-19. During the first week of this year, January 3-9, the number of new cases of COVID-19 rose by 78%, while of deaths from the novel coronavirus by 26%. At the same time, the number of patients who got cured declined by 36% on a week before, Nicolae Jelamschi, director of the National Public Health Agency, was quoted by IPN as saying in a news conference.

According to him, the rise in the new cases is due to the fact that many nationals returned home from abroad to spend the holidays in Moldova. 90% of the cases are the COVID-19 Delta variant, while 10% the Omicron variant. The COVID-19 incidence rate the last seven days was 99 cases per 100,000 people.

29% of Moldova’s population got vaccinated against COVID-19. Among those vaccinated are 5,000 children. The highest immunization rates are in Chisinau, Bălți, Soroca, and Dubăsari, while the lowest rates are in ATU Gagauzia, Sângerei, and Leova.

The Moldovans who want to get a vaccine can choose from among the available vaccines made by Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Sinovac and Sinopharm.
