Moldova hosts European Heritage Days

The European Heritage Days are taking place in Moldova. During September 13-25, the institutions managed by the Ministry of Culture will stage performances, exhibitions of national costumes, handicraft fairs, exhibitions of religious books and manuscripts. There will be shown documentaries about mansions and monuments that need to be promoted and held a sculpture workshop, IPN reports.

On September 14, the UNESCO Committees of the Ministry of Culture of Romania and the Ministry of Culture of Moldova will have a joint meeting. The two countries submitted a joint file to have the national shirt put on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan said the registration of this file is extremely important for the two states, especially now that Moldova obtained the candidate country status.

“The promotion of our heritage with which we want to integrate into the European Union depends a lot on us, on how we visit these events, how we visit these archeological sites, how we visit these museums, how we realize the value of our heritage as the Europeans will perceive the image of the Republic of Moldova in the same way,” stated Sergiu Prodan.

The minister noted that Moldova makes effort to develop the national heritage and also the cultural heritage of Ukraine by supporting the people of culture of the neighboring country and its cultural heritage that is being barbarously destroyed in this unjust war. This year, the Kyiv National Academic Drama Theater will close the Meeting of Romanian National Theaters as a guest of honor with a play by Shakespeare.
 
On September 17, there will be staged the Țîpova Legends Festival. Petru Vicol, director general of the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History, said that emphasis in the festival will be placed on legends typical of this region. The program includes a performance of music, a handicraft fair and activities for children.

On September 23, the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History will host the third scientific conference centering on the Bessarabian personalities of the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, held in memory of Iustin Frățiman.

On September 24-25, the Museum will mount the traditional handicraft fair in its yard. The European Heritage Days end on September 28 with an exhibition of photographs about the restoration of the vertical stained-glass window of the Big House hall.

Maria Shleahtitski, director of the National Museum of Literature “Mihail Kogălniceanu”, said that several rare religious books of the museum dating from the start of the 17th century will be exhibited for the first time in the past 30 years. There will also be mounted an exhibition centering on Mihai Cimpoi and a street exhibition about Spiridon Vangheli. The fourth edition of the national essay competition will be launched in the period.

Ion Ciobanu, director of the Natural Cultural Reserve “Orheiul Vechi”, said the series of events in Orhei starts on September 19 with a photo exhibition about archeological research conducted during over half a century in Orheiul Vechi. Together with volunteers, they will conduct a campaign to clean the Răut River along its length. During two weeks, together with students of the Academy of Music, Theater and Plastic Arts and sculptors, they will organize a sculpture workshop for students to make replicas of architectural elements existing on the territory of the reserve so as to attract visitors to Orheiul Vechi by these.

On September 21, the Agency for Monument Inspection and Restoration will stage a documentary film evening about mansions and monuments that need to be introduced into the civil circuit and about those that are part of this circuit. On September 23, there will be mounted an exhibition centering on ten mansions that are in a bad state of repair.

On September 14, a contemporary art exhibition entitled “At Home” will present a number of art genres, especially alternative arts. The director of the National Museum of Arts Tudor Zbârnea said that it is an exhibition about refugees, related to the tragic events taking place in Ukraine. On September 15, there will be staged an exhibition of graphic, universal and old arts. It will present the works to restore the wall painting in the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church in Căușeni carried out within a project financed by the U.S. and the Government of the Republic of Moldova, which is coming to an end. On September 17, the fresco will be opened to the public.

Launched in France by the Council of Europe in 1985 and run as a joint initiative of the European Commission and the Council of Europe since 1999, the European Heritage Days have enabled citizens to explore culture through themed events and have helped uncover histories of people and places that have contributed to shaping the culture and heritage of Europe.
