Former President Nicolae Timofti said that he was and is a convinced pro-European, and the Republic of Moldova has no other more beneficial path for the people and for the country than joining the European Union. In his opinion, the incumbent President is doing the right thing by getting closer and closer to the European Union, IPN reports.
The former head of state noted that, during his tenure, there was no official initiative from any state institution to organize such a referendum as the one set for October 20. He received such a proposal from a former President, whose name he does not want to disclose, but he did not consider the time was then opportune for such an exercise.
“At that time, there were heated discussions in society about the further path of the Republic of Moldova. It went to a referendum in which the people were to be asked – shall we follow the path to the east or the path to the west? Shall we be with the European Union or with Russia? But the Parliament chose me as a person who supports the program of these parties for the European path and we succeeded and signed the Association Agreement with the EU,” Nicolae Timofti stated in the talk show “Black Box Plus” on TV8 channel.
The ex-President said that in the situation at that time he considered that it was not necessary to hold such a plebiscite. “I was convinced that all the people were for Europe. Many went abroad, live there, work there, help those in the country financially, materially, supported them and understood that the way of life in the EU is more beneficial to a person, to the country, to each person,” noted Nicolae Timofti.
In his opinion, if the President analyzed the situation and came to this conclusion that such a referendum should be held, it means that it is necessary. “I’m sure that Missis Mai Sandu analyzed things, listened to the parties, listened to the people, listened to all state institutions and came to this conclusion - that a referendum should be held on this issue,” said the former President.
