The total area of Moldova’s lands is over 3 million ha and the arable land represents about 2 million ha of these. The soil is one of the most important natural resources, the main treasure of the country, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry noted in a press release issued on the occasion of Earth Day that is annually celebrated on April 22, IPN reports.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry calls on the people to manage the land resources reasonably and efficiently, to obey the principles of sustainable agriculture, to become involved in cleanup and territorial development activities, to inform themselves about the effects of the own actions on the environment, to reduce water, to recycle, to help identify solutions to accelerate the transition to a sustainable development model and to transmit messages about the importance of environmental protection.

In spring 1970, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda. First held on April 22, 1970, Earth Day as an annual event to demonstrate support for environmental protection now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EarthDay.org, including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. Earth Day was declared an official holiday by the UN in 2009.
