Moldova’s population as of January 1, 2008 was about 3.572 million. It increased by 140,000 people during a year. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, on January 1, 2007 Moldova had a population of 3.432 million, Info-Prim Neo reports. The urban population was 1.476 million, while the rural population 2.096 million. The population of Chisinau municipality on January 1, 2008 was 785,100. As many as 68,300 people of the total 785,100 lived in suburbs. The municipality of Balti had a population of 148,100, while the Autonomous Territorial Unit Gagauzia of 159,700. The following districts had the largest number of residents: Ungheni -117,200, Cahul - 123,800, Hancesti – 123,500, Orhei - 125,900, and Soroca - 101,500. Basarabeasca district had only 29,400 inhabitants, Leova - 54,100, Ocnita- 56,800, Rezina - 53,200 Taraclia - 44,700, and Soldanesti – 44,100.
