The Republic of Moldova received 30 Vision Box installations for verifying biometric passport data. The equipment was bought with a grant provided by the European Commission within the Biometric Passport for Moldova Project, which aims to modernize the infrastructure for making, issuing and processing biometric passports, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Vision Box installations can read information from the document’s chip. According to the deputy director general of the state-run company “Registru” Vasile Chernyi, the devices are designed for local data checking so that the people make sure that the information on the chip is true. The installations will be set up at bus and railway terminals, border crossing points, the Chisinau International Airport and at document issuing units of IS “Registru” during 2012. A Vision Box system costs €9,700, without VAT.
